Poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK. It is known to have more severe effects on vulnerable groups, for example the elderly, children and people already suffering from pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
Studies have suggested that the most deprived areas of Britain bear a disproportionate share of poor air quality. The most immediate air quality challenge is tackling the problem of NO2 concentrations around roads – the only statutory air quality limit that the UK is currently failing to meet.
The issue is particularly experienced in towns and cities. The UK Government is committed to taking action against poor air quality in urban areas. The main driver of Government policy is legal action being brought against it as it has binding targets it was supposed to have met.
