New container weighing regulations came into force across the globe on 1 July 2016. The amendments to the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention require packed shipping containers to have a verified gross mass (VGM) before they can be loaded on a ship for export. The amendments were adopted by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) to enhance maritime safety and reduce the dangers to containerships, their crews, and all those involved throughout the supply chain.
It is important for shippers to check whether they are affected by the new rules. This Guidance Document will help Logistics UK members to assess the impact on your company. Shippers are advised to contact their carrier and/or freight forwarder to discuss these issues in further detail.
