UK economy in focus of FTA Logistics Report 2016

Tuesday 26 April 2016

The UK economy is one of the focal points of the FTA Logistics Report 2016, outlining the fundamental changes in the way we shop and the impact they have on goods being delivered.

According to the Freight Transport Association Report, launched today at the CV Show in Birmingham, a stronger economy is leading to increased demand for logistics.

The Report shows that online shopping grew phenomenally in 2015, with an average weekly spend of around £816 million - an increase of 12.4 per cent since 2014, and double the amount spent in 2010.

FTA's Director of Policy, Karen Dee, presented the document and commented: "There is no doubt that logistics is changing. Online shopping is just one example - we have already seen how it has grown, and it is expected to continue to rise in the next few years – with estimated retail spending set to reach £62.7 billion by 2020. Resilience is part and parcel of the logistics industry but all of this inevitably has implications for delivery fleets and skills.

"This year’s Logistics Report indicates that economic expectations for our sector are optimistic. Domestic activity is expected to increase in 2016 across the top five sectors with retail, distribution and haulage being the top of the list."

The FTA Logistics Report highlights the headline events and trends of the freight and logistics industry over the past year, and is considered the definitive analysis of logistics trends.

Prosperity, productivity and resilience headline the 2016 Report which outlines how Government can support the industry; understanding the competing demands - economy, safety & environment; working with the industry; identify measures which work across all objectives and providing a consistent framework which focuses on compliance rather than introducing new regulations.

A key source of data for the Report was the Logistics Industry Survey 2015/16, responses to which said that investment in road improvements, recognising the vital role of logistics in the economy and cutting fuel duty should be the top three actions for Government.

FTA’s Logistics Report is produced annually, and explores the influences that businesses should take into account as they deliberate, plan and invest for the future.

Visit the Association at the CV Show 2016 between 26 and 28 April, at the NEC Birmingham – Hall 4, Stand 4F20. The FTA team will be on hand to discuss the Logistics Report in more detail, and help provide information regarding a wide range of FTA products and services; including Visionfta, Van Excellence, Live Drive Pro, and the recently launched Fleet Management Qualifications (FMQs).
