New figures prove vans are vital to UK economy, says FTA

Tuesday 26 April 2016

The Freight Transport Association says news that van numbers have exceeded four million for the first time in the UK is proof of their huge contribution to the logistics industry and the UK economy.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced today that a total of 4,007,331 vans are now in use on UK roads - a 4.3% increase on the previous 12 months. Demand for new vans is also at a record level.

Mark Cartwright, FTA's Head of Vans, said: "This further demonstrates the continued growth of vans and their importance to the UK economy in supporting online and entrepreneurial activity.

"However, with great power comes great responsibility, and it is incumbent on operators of all sizes and sectors to ensure that they operate their vehicles in a safe, compliant and efficient manner. FTA's Van Excellence programme exists to help operators achieve this goal."

Van Excellence is an industry-led scheme launched in 2010 to represent the van industry, share good practice and help operators demonstrate high standards. It has more than 100 members and a Small Fleet Programme has just been launched for operators with 10 or fewer vans.

Van Excellence is on show at FTA's stand F20 in Hall 4 at the CV Show at Birmingham NEC this week. For more information see www.vanexcellence.co.uk, email info@vanexcellence.co.uk or call 03717 11 22 22.
