As FTA’s European Policy Manager, Sarah Laouadi plays an instrumental role in defending FTA members’ interests in relation to European legislation affecting the transport and logistics industry. She also supports FTA’s Brexit campaigns, leading on aspects impacting road operators.
FTA Shop was introduced in 1970 and 50 years – half a century – is a long time. So we turned to Richard Turner OBE, who joined FTA in 1973 as Highways and Traffic Adviser and retired in 2007 as Chief Executive. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Shop was one of Turner’s many responsibilities as Director of Marketing.
The year was 1970. NASA’s Apollo programme was in full swing, man having first set foot on the moon just nine months earlier.
FTA’s modal councils – road, air, water and rail – follow the 13 regional Freight Councils that take place quarterly across the UK. FTA’s Shippers’ Council, which is designed for the buyers of third-party freight services or the managers of multimodal supply chains, also meets quarterly.
Halifax-based trucking company Collett & Sons Ltd returned home victorious last October, after discovering that it had won in the coveted Road Freight Operator of the Year 2019 category, sponsored by Port of Dover, at FTA’s Logistics Awards 2019. The glittering awards ceremony was held at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in Central London on 24 October 2019.
FTA’s air freight seminar held on 27 February delivered a packed agenda and generated plenty of lively discussion. Held at One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, the purpose-built home of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Elizabeth de Jong, FTA’s Director of Policy, set the scene by outlining the objectives for the day.
To say that the government’s target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is bold in its ambition would risk being accused of classic British understatement. However, with transport currently accounting for more than a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, the industry must play its part in helping to achieve this incredibly challenging target.
In just ten short years, driverless vehicles will be a familiar sight on Britain’s roads, according to Dr Daniel Ruiz, the man at the helm of Zenzic, a future-focused organisation created by government and industry to accelerate the self-driving revolution in the UK.
When it comes to supply chain management, sustainability and profitability are no longer mutually exclusive concepts. While logistics remains a low-margin industry, the bottom line no longer has to be sacrificed to implement financially crippling environmental policies. Instead sustainability can complement a company’s competitiveness.
At last year’s series of Transport Manager conferences, there was one session which consistently scored above all others in delegates’ feedback. This was a presentation on the use of Vehicles as a Weapon (VAW), which was delivered by Scott Gibbons from National Counter Terrorism Policing Headquarters (NCTPHQ).
FTA has recently launched a brand-new supply chain consultancy service. Three industry experts – Martin Palmer, Eddy de Jong and Paul Wilson – will deliver the new service, which will complement FTA’s existing in-house consultancy service.
Born into a family haulage business, John Lucy can claim to have spent his whole life in the logistics industry. He spent the early part of his career building up an international transport business, before deciding to close it 20 years ago. Since then he has held various management roles within the industry. In 2018 he joined FTA as Manager – International Trade and Transport Procedures, supporting and informing members that buy or operate international road freight services.
FTA’s modal councils – road, air, water and rail – follow the 13 regional Freight Councils that take place quarterly across the UK. While the regional Freight Councils often share a largely common agenda, they also offer the opportunity to discuss local issues that are important to FTA members. These feed into the modal councils, which are the democratic bodies of FTA that determine FTA’s policy position.
