Logistics UK welcomes government’s strategy to decarbonise the UK’s industrial base
Logistics UK has publicly welcomed the government’s Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy, which it published recently.
The strategy sets out how industry can decarbonise while remaining commercially competitive, and without pushing emissions abroad.
VISION FOR LOW CARBON INDUSTRIAL SECTOR
Building on the 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, the strategy sets out the government’s vision for a prosperous, low carbon UK industrial sector in 2050 while aiming to offer industry some long-term certainty as it invests in decarbonisation. The strategy is focussed on avoiding carbon leakage, attracting future investment and encouraging new industries to develop.
HELPING UK BUSINESS GROW INTO A LOW CARBON WORLD
“Decarbonising UK industry is a core part of the government’s ambitious plan for the green industrial revolution,” said, Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP, Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, in her foreword to the report. “We will use the actions set out in this strategy to accelerate the green transformation in industry: aiming high with our ambition, as we expect that emissions need to fall by around two thirds by 2035; and ensuring UK businesses expand into new and growing markets in a low carbon world, while broader competitiveness is protected.”
Logistics UK has said that the sector is committed to transitioning to net zero emissions and that the steps outlined in the report should help support companies of all shapes and sizes to decarbonise their operations.
“We are pleased to see the government’s commitment to ensure the land planning system is fit to deploy low carbon infrastructure,” said Michelle Gardner, Head of Public Policy at Logistics UK, “and that policies will be developed to support the uptake of lower emission fuels in buildings, as well as a focus on upskilling and the creation of new, green jobs."
