M&S scoops top environmental award

Marks and Spencer has been rewarded for leading the way with reducing environmental impact and carbon emissions at this year’s FTA Multimodal Awards at Birmingham NEC.

FTA member M&S received the FTA Multimodal Award for Contribution to Environmental Sustainability from Freight Transport Association Chief Executive David Wells in recognition of its commitment to reducing carbon in its transport operations.

Mr Wells said: “M&S is not only demonstrating environmental sustainability but is leading the way when it comes to reducing its environmental impact and carbon emissions.

“Significant effort has been made so that M&S can measure, evaluate and report the carbon impact of global goods transportation and to then work with others to reduce its impact.”

Barry Wallace, M&S Logistics Manager International Freight, said “We are delighted and proud to receive this prestigious award. At M&S our Plan A agenda underpins everything we do in our business and we consider all aspects of our impact on the environment and the communities that we come into contact with. This is no different when it comes to our global supply chain and international freight.”

Multimodal is the UK and Ireland’s leading freight transport and logistics exhibition, and FTA will be hosting a series of seminars and workshops tomorrow.

In the seminar theatre, the subjects to be covered include the impact of mega shipping vessels and maritime alliances; the future of airports in the UK; the Agenda for More Rail Freight; and responding to environmental challenges in transport. Speakers from Maersk Line, Peel Ports, Heathrow Airport, Sainsbury’s, Network Rail, Heriot-Watt University and UPS are amongst the leading names taking part, along with FTA experts.

A series of workshops will take place in the workshop theatre on Contracts of carriage; the EU’s new Union Customs Code explained; container weighing - understanding the new legislation; and the Home Office Haulier Security Accreditation Scheme, with experts from BIFA, HMRC, World Shipping Council, ICHCA, Border Force, FTA and many others taking part.
