Minister to address freight industry on greenhouse gas reduction challenge

Thursday 26 May 2011

Mike Penning, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, will be addressing the Freight Transport Association’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Conference next month regarding the contribution that the freight industry can make to national greenhouse gas reduction targets following his endorsement of the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme in April this year.

The conference, to be held in London on 7 June, will seek to help operators identify how they can capture the business benefits from reducing carbon emissions whilst meeting the climate change challenge. It will provide an opportunity for operators to set their own carbon reduction plans and prioritise actions. They will hear about the latest carbon reduction practices and the policy challenges ahead for industry as it continues to make reductions through technology, modal shift and supply chain collaboration.

The conference will be chaired by FTA Board member Rebecca Jenkins, with speakers including Professor Alan McKinnon of Heriot Watt University, plus representatives from DHL Supply Chain, Cenex, Mercedes, Homebase, John Lewis Partnership, Defra, Tesco Distribution and the NNFCC – the UK’s National Centre for Biorenewable Energy, Fuels and Materials.

Key themes of the conference will include:

  • Reducing carbon emissions through collaborative initiatives and modal shift
  • The importance of driver training to reduce carbon emissions
  • Exploring the options for alternative fuels and low carbon technology
  • How to demonstrate environmental credentials

Attendance is open to members of FTA at £325 plus VAT for the first delegate and £275 plus VAT for subsequent delegates, and to non-members at £385 plus VAT for the first delegate and £345 plus VAT for subsequent delegates.
