FTA welcomes new minister with transport remit for Welsh Government

Tuesday 17 May 2011

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) welcomes Carl Sargeant to his role as Minister for Local Government and Communities for the Welsh Government. But the leading trade body has warned that unless transport is given top priority under this new ministry it could undermine Wales’ economic recovery.

Michael Webb, FTA’s Head of Public Affairs, said:

“The importance of good transport links to the Welsh economy and its environmental ambitions cannot be understated. But it remains to be seen how much of this newly created ministerial role will be dedicated to meeting transport’s needs.

“From meetings with Mr Sargeant when he was Minister for Economy and Transport, FTA is confident he is fully aware of the logistics sector’s needs and supportive of its aims in Wales.

“We welcome this appointment and look forward to working closely with Mr Sargeant to ensure that the importance of good transport links to the Welsh economy remain clear and that the best interests of transport are not left on the back seat.”
