On the road – Logistics UK’s CEO visits Northern Ireland and Wales

Meeting with Economy Minister for Northern Ireland   

Ben Fletcher and Senior Policy Manager Josh Fenton met with Economy Minister for Northern Ireland Dr Caoimhe Archibald MLA, in Belfast at Parliament Buildings at Stormont on 27 January.

The discussion focussed on the critical role of logistics in Northern Ireland’s economy. Other issues raised included the role of decarbonisation in the sector, skills and ongoing challenges with GB to NI trade.

With more than 6,000 logistics businesses in Northern Ireland employing nearly 70,000 people, approximately 8% of the entire workforce, Mr Fletcher called for Northern Ireland to have its own logistics strategy.

Meeting with Plaid Cymru Transport Spokesperson Owen Griffiths 

Mr Fletcher and Mr Fenton met with Owen Griffiths MS, Transport Spokesperson for Plaid Cymru to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing freight, supply chains and transport policy in Wales, as well as the urgent need for a Welsh freight and logistics plan in the 2026-2030 Senedd term.

They spoke about the central role logistics plays in delivering sustainable and inclusive growth and maximising the positive contribution the sector makes to industry, agriculture, exports and everyday life in communities across the nation.

The adoption of a Welsh freight and logistics plan would provide a clear framework to strengthen trade resilience, invest in skills and signal a commitment to growth.

Remarking on the visits, Mr Fletcher said: “Getting out across the UK to meet with members and policymakers has been a number one priority for me since joining the organisation in December. As the largest trade association in the sector, Logistics UK’s influence is far reaching and has a significant impact, and I am keen to see for myself the scale and scope of the industry that we represent – the sheer scale and diversity of the sector is so impressive.

“These visits have been an invaluable opportunity for me to learn firsthand about the challenges these businesses face and the incredible work they do every day.

“In Wales the sector contributes £3.3 billion to the economy and employs 6.7% of the workforce. That is no small number, and to ensure economic growth, we’re calling on the Welsh Government to adopt a freight and logistics strategy that recognises the integral work the industry does in keeping goods and businesses moving.

“I feel privileged to be a part of an organisation that champions logistics and look forward to continued engagement and insightful discussion with members and policymakers in the coming weeks.”
