In this weekly column from Logistics UK’s Chief Executive Ben Fletcher, we showcase the places he’s visited and the people he’s engaged with.

Visit to National Traffic Operations Centre

CEO Ben Fletcher and Head of Road Freight and English Regions Policy Maddi Solloway-Price visited National Highways at the National Traffic Operations Centre in Birmingham.

There, they met with National Highways CEO Nick Harris and External Affairs National Lead Wayne Carey, who gave them a tour of the facility, sharing insights into how live traffic management works in real time. There were discussions about future collaboration to support safer, more efficient journeys.

Opening of new Northampton Gateway Rail Freight Terminal

Mr Fletcher joined Maritime Transport for the launch of the new Northampton Gateway Rail Freight Terminal, marking a significant milestone for rail freight capacity and the golden logistics triangle.

Those in attendance included the Managing Director of Maritime Transport John Williams and Minister of State for Rail Lord Hendy, alongside strong representation from across the sector.

The event underlined the importance of unlocking rail capacity, accelerating planning processes and supporting the infrastructure driving growth and decarbonisation.

Visit to A47 junction upgrades

He visited the A47 Thickthorn junction near Norfolk for a roundtable and tour with the Roads Minister Simon Lightwood MP, local MP Ben Goldsborough and other business stakeholders.

Mr Fletcher said: “At Logistics UK we’re focused on ensuring that our sector is given all the tools it needs to grow in an efficient, productive and sustainable way, while supporting businesses and communities.

“This week was full of invaluable insights on how this can be achieved, whether goods are being moved via road or rail, and demonstrated the importance of continued investment into infrastructure.

“My sincere thanks to all of our hosts this week. It has been both eye-opening and rewarding engaging with partners across the sector who exemplify the expertise and excellence that keeps the UK moving.”
