New rail services launched to connect DP World London Gateway
The new services, which are operated in partnership with GB Railfreight, launched on 19 May in order to support the £1 billion investment in DP World London Gateway which will see greater capacity volumes.
In order to expand connectivity between nine strategic rail freight terminals and major UK ports, Maritime plans to introduce more services over the next few weeks, including Southampton to Maritime's SRFI at SEGRO Logistics Park in Northampton and Manchester to Felixstowe.
Logistics UK's Senior Policy Manager Alexandra Herdman said: "Maritime Transport's new programme of rail freight services underscores the crucial role rail freight plays in the nation's logistics. However, rail freight is often overlooked by government policy, despite offering significant benefits to the logistics network including lower emissions, reducing congestion and improving air quality.
"For rail freight to succeed and meet growth targets, investment is needed in capacity improvements, electrification, and support for new or improved intermodal facilities across the network."
