Measures needed to unlock growth and protect infrastructure, says Logistics UK

The response strongly supports the clearer, more rules-based approach in the draft NPPF and particularly welcomes the inclusion of a dedicated logistics policy (E3). However, it warns that the proposals fall short in several critical areas.

Logistics UK is urging government to introduce firm national safeguards for existing logistics sites and to embed logistics more explicitly in Spatial Development Strategies and local plans.

The response also highlights the sector’s growing energy and infrastructure needs as it transitions to zero emission operations, and the need for additional quality driver facilities.

Jonathan Walker, Head of Infrastructure and Planning Policy at Logistics UK said: “It is encouraging to see a stronger national focus on freight and logistics in the proposed reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework. The introduction of a dedicated logistics policy is a positive step which recognises the vital role our sector plays in keeping the UK economy moving.

“However, further measures are needed to ensure the planning system fully supports growth. Existing logistics sites must be better protected from the pressure of alternative land uses, and logistics needs to be embedded more clearly within Spatial Development Strategies and local plans.

“As the sector transitions to zero-emission operations, access to energy infrastructure and the provision of high-quality driver facilities will also be critical. Getting these reforms right will ensure the planning system enables a modern, efficient and resilient logistics network that supports businesses and communities across the country.”
