Logistics UK responds as Skills England fails to highlight sector

It focuses on the Industrial Strategy's eight high growth sectors, in addition to housebuilding and health and adult social care, both mentioned in the government's Plan for Change. It highlights growing demand for skills in operational technology, workforce planning, and digital systems. 

Logistics is not included as a priority, due to Skills England’s focus on the eight high growth sectors and Plan for Change. Logistics UK is expressing its disappointment, highlighting that the government’s industrial strategy recognises that logistics makes a vital contribution to the UK economy, and that skilled logistics careers underpin the growth-driving sectors in the strategy.

Bethany Windsor, Head of Skills Policy and Generation Logistics said: "While logistics is not listed as a standalone priority, the report offers valuable insights to the sector nonetheless. The report’s methodology and cross-sector analysis highlight growing demand for skills in operational technology, workforce planning, and digital systems, areas central to modern logistics.  

“This creates an opportunity to align sector skills needs with government priorities, strengthen training pipelines, and make the case for logistics’ formal inclusion in future skills assessments.  

“By mapping our sector’s roles to the priority occupations identified in related industries such as Advanced Manufacturing, Defence, and Clean Energy, Logistics UK will engage with Skills England to evidence the industry’s role as a critical enabler of economic growth and resilience.”
