Logistics UK partakes in London Assembly Transport Committee

Logistics UK’s Head of Public Affairs Natalie Chapman appeared on a panel at the London Assembly Transport Committee on 12 November alongside James Barwise, Policy Lead for Infrastructure at the Road Haulage Association and Ian Wainwright, Director at Future City Logistics. 

The questions asked by committee members revolved around the types of freight in London, the impact of freight on London’s roads, and freight consolidation and land use, touching upon concerns about congestion and the flow of traffic through the city. 

Chapman said: “Logistics UK was pleased to participate in the London Assembly Transport Committee, representing our members and engaging in topics that affect their businesses. 

“Commercial vehicles are not on London’s roads by choice, but demand, and should be perceived as a positive sign of a healthy economy. 

“The UK logistics sector generates £170 billion for the UK economy and is an unsung hero in what it contributes. 

“One of the main hindrances to retiming deliveries, moving commercial vehicles away from peak commuter traffic, and protecting vulnerable road users is the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS).  

“The LLCS no longer matches up with our shared priorities of reducing congestion, improving air quality, and reducing accidents and incidents. We are calling on committee members to support changes to this scheme and ensure it aligns with the needs of logistics businesses. 

“Nothing moves without logistics, so safeguarding the sector will help deliver the growth the UK economy needs.”
