Logistics UK joins industry leaders in hosting local MP
On Friday 28 February, MP Amanda Hack toured one of Amazon’s Fulfilment Centres and the Maritime rail freight terminal and received a briefing from Logistics UK and SEGRO on the sector as a whole as well as on SEGRO’s logistics sites in the UK, including East Midlands Gateway.
With 27% of the total workforce in North West Leicestershire employed in logistics companies and the constituency being situated at the heart of the UK Logistics Network, the hosts briefed Amanda Hack about the value of the sector to the local and national economy, and how it breaks down barriers to opportunity.
The tour included seeing how logistics is innovating and using new technologies to improve efficiency, upgrading driver facilities to address skills shortages in the sector and looking to decarbonise as part of net zero ambitions. Discussions also covered wider infrastructure needs, including the challenges around securing power to handle rising demands as the sector electrifies and the role of local education providers in delivering the necessary training to equip the next generation of workers.
