Logistics UK holds Industrial Strategy meeting in Parliament

The event was chaired by Mike Reader MP, with Amanda Hack MP participating too. Both MPs have large numbers of logistics roles within their constituencies.

Logistics businesses DP World, SEGRO, GXO, PD Ports, DHL, along with Logistics UK, set out how their work underpins the UK's growth-driving sectors and how they could unlock UK productivity if logistics was recognised as a foundational sector in the final Industrial Strategy.

The policy areas that can make a real difference, from transport and energy, and skills to trade, are spread across Whitehall, and the panel stressed the need for a strong Industrial Strategy to pull these threads together so logistics can drive growth, clean energy and opportunity.

Kevin Green, Director of Policy & Communications at Logistics UK, who was also in attendance, said: “It was very encouraging to have so many industry leaders around the table with Mike Reader MP and Amanda Hack MP. The roundtable provided a great opportunity to highlight that logistics is essential to our economy, our way of life and the nation’s prosperity. Nothing moves without logistics: it supplies our hospitals, schools, factories and shops with everything they need, everywhere, every day.

“The sector contributes £185 billon to the economy every year and employs 8% of the UK workforce, and research from Oxford Economics shows that by establishing the right partnerships, regulations and investment for logistics, the government can deliver productivity gains that will boost the UK economy by up to £8 billion per year by 2030."

"It is vital that the government backs our sector by recognising it as foundational in its Industrial Strategy. Logistics UK would like to thank everyone involved for a really productive roundtable discussion."

Amanda Hack – Labour MP for North West Leicestershire
