Logistics UK calls for ongoing ambitious partnership ahead of UK and EU May Summit

A draft declaration between the two, reportedly seen by the media outlet, is understood to recognise a “common understanding” on several shared interests, ahead of the UK-EU summit on 19 May.  

Questions remain about how discussions with the EU will impact ongoing trade negotiations with the US. The UK hopes to secure a reduction of recently imposed US tariffs. However, there is a growing acceptance a deal may not be possible before 19 May.  

Nichola Mallon, Logistics UK's Head of Trade and Devolved Policy commented: "The EU is the UK’s biggest trading partner. If the government is to realise its growth ambitions, it must be ambitious in reducing the frictions and burdens facing GB traders via the ongoing reset in relations and the review of the UK EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement.  

"Logistics UK has been constant in our support for a comprehensive SPS Agreement but we also urge the UK government and EU to seek to reduce customs barriers, particularly in the area of safety and security, as both seek to prioritise security and defence cooperation.”
