Government improves consideration of freight in appraisal of road investment schemes

Logistics UK has now been briefed that updated values of freight time savings are being applied to road schemes, significantly strengthening the case for investment in logistics corridors.

The new approach is delivering a 36% average uplift in scheme benefit-cost ratios, pushing 12 schemes into a higher Value for Money category.

DfT and National Highways are now developing proposals to embed the new approach, which they will consult upon later this year.

Logistics UK's Head of Infrastructure and Planning Policy Jonathan Walker said: "This is a welcome development that finally recognises the real economic value of freight transport. Previous appraisals often overlooked the worth of the goods being moved, which is a significant oversight.

"The 36% average uplift in benefit-cost ratios shows just how much freight corridors were being undervalued. This improved approach should deliver much better investment decisions and stronger cases for the logistics infrastructure we need. The upcoming consultation will be key to making sure this becomes standard practice."
