Government considers adopting EU vehicle safety standards post-Brexit
She urged the government to adopt the EU’s General Safety Regulations (GSR) – introduced by the EU in 2022 – which mandates 19 advanced safety technologies, including collision avoidance systems.
Logistics UK sent a briefing to Baroness Pidgeon on the subject matter ahead of the session. In response, transport minister Lord Hendy said that the government is actively evaluating whether to adopt the GSR to enhance commercial vehicle safety.
He emphasised that all new vehicles must meet stringent UK safety requirements, while the voluntary Euro NCAP five-star rating system incentivises manufacturers to exceed minimum standards.
Lord Hendy noted that analysis of GSR’s suitability for UK roads is ongoing, with many commercial vehicles already complying due to global manufacturing practices. He added that the government aims to announce its decision on GSR adoption soon.
