Government brings forward EV review as EU drops phase-out target

The government will begin its review of EV sales targets this year rather than 2027, pledging to be “responsive” to the industry. However, Industry Minister Chris McDonald denied the government’s review signalled any plans to dilute the UK’s phase-out of petrol and diesel vehicles.

This follows the European Commission unveiling a plan on 16 December for a “clean and competitive automotive sector,” which will see emissions targets for vehicles shift to a 90% cut from 2021 levels.

The Commission is also proposing a targeted amendment to the CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles to ease compliance with 2030 targets.

Separately, the Conservatives pledged on 14 December to end “net zero car subsidies” if they win the next election, with party leader Kemi Badenoch citing their “disastrous effect” on the British car industry.
