eHGVs rolled out in Amazon’s fleet

Following an order in January, Amazon has now deployed eHGVs in its fleet.

Electric HGVs have officially been deployed in Amazon’s fleet following an order for more than 200 eActros 600 trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks.

The order, which was announced in January, is part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, which requires a large-scale effort to increase route efficiency, scale zero exhaust emission vehicles and partner with industry and governments.

The trucks will be used for high mileage routes making up Amazon’s middle mile network in the UK and Germany, transporting trailers to and from its fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations.

With this deployment, the total of eHGVs in the UK will be brought to 160. The eActros 600 trucks will travel the equivalent of 70,000 miles a year each on average.

These trucks were picked because their range is more than 500km when fully charged, and they’re capable of transporting up to a 22-tonne load per journey. They also offer a battery capacity of more than 600kW hours.

To support this fleet, Amazon has installed fast charging points at its UK sites with 360kW chargers that can charge the 40-tonne trucks from 20% to 80% battery capacity in over an hour.

Amazon has invested more than €1 billion in the coming years to decarbonise its transportation network across Europe. By the end of 2024, it had 38 eHGVs in this network, with almost 50 deployed in California, and together with its delivery partners, it has more than 3,000 electric vans delivering packages to customers across Europe.
