These include the Transport AI Action Plan, a consultation on the Statement of Safety Principles for self-driving vehicles, and draft regulations to restrict marketing terms such as “autonomous” or “self-driving” to vehicles that meet specific legal standards.

The AI Action Plan sets out how AI could support transport objectives such as improving safety, reducing emissions, and increasing network efficiency. Examples include AI-enabled traffic management, predictive maintenance and intelligent logistics.

The plan emphasises the need for industry leadership, skills development, high-quality data infrastructure, and responsible deployment.

Ben Garratt, Logistics UK’s Deputy Director – Public Affairs commented: “AI and automation are already helping to improve logistics safety, sustainability and efficiency — and have the potential to go much further. To achieve this, it’s essential that those developing new technologies understand the operational realities and complex environments our sector operates in, and work with us to deliver shared solutions.

"The government’s new Transport AI Action Plan supports this direction, rightly emphasising collaboration, data infrastructure and responsible deployment. The two consultations on autonomous vehicles are also key opportunities to ensure the future regulatory framework reflects logistics use cases and needs.”
