Boost for GBRf south west freight operations

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has secured a two-year contract with mineral company Imerys to transport China clay, also known as Kaolin, from local Cornish rail sites to Fowey Docks and Cliffe Vale in Staffordshire.

It is part of GBRf’s commitment to grow rail freight in the south west of England. Kaolin is mined in Cornwall as a critical raw material used in a wide range of products that includes paper, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It has been a significant industry for Cornwall for centuries.

Moving it via rail will improve road safety, ease congestion and reduce wear and tear, particularly on rural roads.

Carl Kent, Sales Director at GB Railfreight, said: “We are pleased to enter into this agreement with Imerys, supporting the movement of critical local volumes and reinforcing our ambition to grow rail freight in the south west. We look forward to delivering our market‑leading service to Imerys for at least the next two years.”

Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager at Logistics UK said: “GB Railfreight’s new agreement with Imerys is a positive step for both the logistics sector and the regional economy in the south west. Cornwall’s China clay industry is of long‑standing national importance, supplying critical raw materials to a wide range of manufacturers, and moving this traffic by rail supports a resilient and efficient supply chain. This contract demonstrates how rail freight can play a stronger role in moving bulk commodities while supporting local industry and long‑term economic activity.

“Shifting significant volumes of kaolin from road to rail will also deliver clear wider benefits, including improved road safety, reduced congestion and lower wear and tear on Cornwall’s rural road network.

“Logistics UK supports initiatives that make better use of rail, helping the sector cut emissions and improve environmental outcomes while ensuring goods continue to move reliably.

“We look forward to seeing further investment and collaboration that grows rail freight capacity and choice across the UK.”
