FTA Driver of the Year to be named at Freight in the City

Wednesday 26 October 2016

There’s just a week to go until the overall winner of the Freight Transport Association’s Driver of the Year contest 2016 is announced at the Freight in the City expo at Alexandra Palace, which takes place on Wednesday 2 November.

The competition was held over three days in July at Mercedes-Benz Wentworth Park in Barnsley, with competitions in three categories – vans, 18 tonne and 44 tonne trucks.

Will Reeves, FTA’s Sponsorship and Advertising Manager, said:

“Back in July FTA members were invited to enter their best drivers, who were then put through some vigorous tasks.  We tested their driving style on public roads, they carried out a pre-use defect check, manoeuvred into tight spots and were tested on legislation.  They also had some fun going off-road in a Unimog and ‘driving’ a radio controlled truck.  The quality of drivers was outstanding, we’ve now checked over and verified the scores for each day and are looking forward to awarding the inaugural FTA Driver of the Year.”

Matthew Pickering of Samworth Brothers Supply Chain was named Truck Driver of the Year 44 tonne 2016 sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Trucks, beating 19 other finalists to lift the trophy.  David West of Total Foodservice Solutions scooped Truck Driver of the Year 18 tonne 2016 sponsored by Bridgestone Tyres and the winner of Van Excellence Driver of the Year sponsored by LeasePlan was Matthew Young of AAH Pharmaceutical.

On Wednesday the three category winners will be at Road Transport Media’s Freight in the City event where the name of the overall champion will be announced by FTA Chief Executive David Wells.
