Transport minister to talk 'bus and coach' at unique engineering conference

Monday 17 January 2011

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Baker, will be the keynote speaker at the Bus and Coach Engineering Conference, a unique event to be hosted by three of the biggest names in the road transport industry. The conference, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers), a professional sector of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers) and Passengerfta, will take place on Wednesday 16 February in London.

Norman Baker will address an audience of professionals in the Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) sector, discussing his time in office so far in the context of the latest developments in bus and coach engineering.

Senior Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown will give an update on the PCV industry and also the latest on the Traffic Commissioner report.

Subject matter to be covered will include:

  • Designing vehicles for maintenance
  • Latest hybrid technology
  • Technician licensing assessment
  • Reducing fuel consumption
  • London bus – latest developments
  • Legislation role play

Lawrie Alford, Strategic Business Manager for Passengerfta, concluded:

“The fact that we have a transport minister speaking at this event should speak volumes in terms of its quality and Mr Baker promises to deliver a fascinating insight into the policy decisions influencing the sector.

“With advances in engineering constantly changing, more than ever PCV operators need to keep ahead of the curve. The Bus and Coach Engineering Conference will arm operators with the information they need to stay legal and compliant and get the best out of their fleets. Furthermore, it will show how serious engineering and compliance issues feature in the day-to-day operation of those fleets.”

The Bus and Coach Engineering Conference takes place on Wednesday 16 February at One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London SW1, price £180 + VAT for IMechE, IRTE or FTA members and £260 + VAT for all other delegates.
