FTA workers have a tee-rific time raising over £1,200 for Cancer Research

Monday 20 August 2018

Three intrepid employees of one of Tunbridge Wells’ biggest businesses, the Freight Transport Association, have raised over £1,200 for Cancer Research UK after taking part in the Great Golf Challenge on 17 August 2018.  The challenge was a gruelling feat of endurance, seeing them play 72 holes of golf in one day, covering almost 13 miles on foot.

Hosted at the Hilden Park Golf Club in Hildenborough –  which kindly opened its course early to enable them to complete the challenge during daylight hours – the keen FTA golfers were IT service desk manager Spencer Garrett (50), IT Support Analyst Shaun Seldon (35) and Facilities Assistant Marcus Sullivan (38).

The challenge, which took 13 hours to complete, was no walk in the park, as Spencer Garrett explains: “While the Great Golf Challenge was physically and mentally exhausting, I’m so glad we took it on to raise money for Cancer Research UK. As amateur golfers, we often missed shots and found it difficult to keep the balls on the fairway, resulting in us walking almost 13 miles and losing quite a few balls while covering the 72 holes.

“We would like to thank our friends, family and colleagues at FTA for supporting us in this challenge. Thanks to their generosity, we smashed our fundraising target and raised more than we could have ever imagined. Cancer has impacted all of us and we’re over the moon to be able to help this charity continue its life-saving work.

“Shaun, Marcus and I maintained a great sense of humour and camaraderie throughout the 13-hour long challenge; this helped us when times became tough.”

To raise extra funds for Cancer Research, FTA’s charity of the year, Spencer, Shaun and Marcus asked FTA colleagues to guess how many golf balls they would lose during the day. The result was 35 lost balls in total, making Deborah Shear, an administrator in the consultancy department, the lucky winner.
