Hundreds of Skills Bootcamp trainees complete HGV driver training
The HGV Skills Bootcamp, established by the government in response to the skills shortage in HGV drivers at the height of the pandemic, is bringing new employees into the logistics workforce, according to new data released by the Driver Academy Group.
The group, a consortium led by HGV training specialist HGVC working alongside Logistics UK and Manpower, this week announced that almost 600 drivers have either passed their practical test and achieved their HGV licence or are about to test. The Driver Academy Group is currently training 1,950 drivers.
Candidates have been drawn from across all the regions of England, where the funding is available. Launched in December 2021, the Driver Academy Group’s HGV Skills Bootcamp has attracted over 30,000 learners, and there are still over 8,000 applicants on its waiting list keen to start the course when more places become available.
When their training is complete, drivers will gain either their Category C or C+E licence or be upgraded from Category C to C+E. Candidates may also gain their specialist licences such as ADR or PDP (to deliver hazardous goods or fuel). Many of those who have graduated from the scheme have already been employed, or have job offers lined up with local employers.
The Skills Bootcamps in HGV driving are open to anyone with a driving licence aged 19 and over and are available at 60 locations across England. Funded by the Department for Education, the bootcamps are part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee programme and aid the acquisition of sector-skills and access to a fast-track interview process.
