Liverpool port workers vote for strike action

Hundreds of port workers at Liverpool voted for two weeks of strike action this week, after pay negotiations broke down without resolution between Peel Ports and the Unite union.

The strike action follows news of potential redundancies at the port, which the union contested in recent weeks.

In the face of the potential disruption which prolonged strikes could cause, Alexandra Herdman, Public Policy Manager said: “The supply chain is resilient and adaptable but it is clear that ongoing industrial action could have an impact on the timely delivery of goods to UK businesses and homes. Our industry is used to finding solutions to problems and has been switching deliveries to alternative destinations and modes of transport since the industrial action started. This will ensure that Christmas goods can be delivered on time. However, we are urging all parties to return to the negotiating table to reach a solution suitable for all, to ensure that any disruption is minimised.”

HARPER APPOINTED SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT

The Rt Hon Mark Harper MP has been named as the new Secretary of State for Transport, following the appointment of Rishi Sunak MP as Prime Minister.  Harper, who was elected as MP for the Forest of Dean in 2005, previously held a number of positions, including Chief Whip (Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury) from 2015-16, Minister for Political and Constitutional Reform (2010-2012), Minister for Immigration (2012-14) and Minister for Disabled People (2014-15). He replaces Ann-Marie Trevelyan, who was in post for a month. Logistics UK will be seeking a meeting with the new minister at the earliest possible opportunity, to ensure that members’ concerns continue to have the ear of government.
