DVS safety permits help halve serious collisions since 2018

Content sponsored by Van Gold Partners

The safety of all road users is a key priority for the logistics sector, which has been demonstrated by industry’s high DVS compliance rate; figures from TfL demonstrate that more than 94% of HGVs in London operate with a DVS safety permit.

DVS permits are issued based on the star rating of each HGV. Currently, for vehicles with a zero star rating, the DVS Safe System must be retrofitted in order to qualify for a permit. However, from October 2024 that will change and vehicles with one- and two-star ratings will also need to comply with the updated DVS Progressive Safe System requirements. For operators who may need to update their safety systems, Logistics UK Van Gold Partner, Brigade Electronics, offers a range of vehicle safety solutions which meet TfL’s current proposals for the Progressive Safe System.

With clear benefits to enhancing road safety among heavier vehicles, such as the number of serious collisions involving HGVs sitting at more than half since the scheme was introduced in 2018 (to 2021), many operators across the sector also choose to invest in additional safety features for their van fleets.

The role of a van driver can be difficult, with rural areas sometimes challenging to navigate, as well as busier, more populated urban areas. Brigade Electronics also offers innovative solutions for van operators, including their van camera monitor systems which enable drivers to manoeuvre and drive safely. Retrofitted cameras can help the driver to see blind spots and offer a reversing aid by delivering a live feed on the monitor of everything in the camera view, including people or obstacles. Leaders in commercial vehicle safety systems since 1976, they also offer recording systems, sensor systems and – as electric vehicles become increasingly quieter – a Quiet Vehicle Sounder (QVS) to alert pedestrians and other vulnerable road users that a quiet vehicle is approaching.
