Dangerous Goods Awareness Day, 11 July
Dangerous goods are used daily, both within homes and on an industrial scale. They form part of everyday items like your mobile phone, detergents and perfumes, in some cases we eat and drink them. Which is why the Dangerous Goods Awareness Day is a must-attend event for the logistics industry.
Logistics UK's Manager Dangerous Goods Information, Percy Thrower commented: "Although we are aware that dangerous goods are in the public domain, people are not aware that they are in everyday items such as the batteries in the TV remote control, your aftershave/perfume and even the food and drink that we consume, albeit in very low concentrations.
"In 2022, one in 20 vehicles in the UK carried dangerous goods, which equates to 85 million tonnes. 57 million tonnes (67%) of this were flammable liquids.” (UK Government Statistics, 22 June 2022).
"Dangerous Goods Awareness Day is about raising awareness of the everyday goods that are carried in our vehicles and preventing an incident from happening.
"Having this day will help in promoting good practice in handling, storing and transporting these substances in such a way as not to cause further harm or damage."
What are ‘Dangerous goods’?
Dangerous goods come in all shapes and sizes. They may be pure chemicals, mixtures of substances, manufactured products, or articles. They can be liquids, gases or solids and even the articles that contain them. Dangerous goods pose a significant risk to people, animals and the environment if not properly handled when in use or being transported.
The UK is governed by The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009, referred to as the CDG Regulations. This in turn implements the Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, known as ADR.
ADR is a multinational agreement aimed at safe transportation of dangerous goods products on road networks all around the world. Over 50 countries have signed the agreement. The agreement covers the products carried, the containers and the vehicles used to transport them.

Somerset air filtration firm invests in new eco-efficient vans
The Maxi Mover vans, which cost £120,000 from Bridgwater-based Jasun Envirocare, have been built to help increase deliveries and improve eco-efficiency.
The company said the new vehicles will improve fuel consumption and increase the amount of product it can transport per trip.
Graham Bentley, chairman of Envirocare said: “We specifically ordered these class-leading, high performance, big volume vans in our own bespoke dimensions and they have been purpose-built for us to meet our load needs.
"They will help us deliver more filters in one go and will ultimately save us from making more trips than we need to. This will boost our commitment to the environment, as fewer trips mean reduced fuel use, and it will help save money too.

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It provides a framework for organisations to design and implement an EMS, and continually improve their environmental performance.
Bentley added: "ISO 14001 is all about reducing our environmental impact through our operations, this not only contributes to a healthier planet, but also inspires customer and team trust and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability."
