Logistics UK continues political outreach to keep the sector front of mind

Logistics UK is working to establish strong relationships with new government ministers, last week hosting new Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood MP at a meeting with members in central London. Ms Greenwood’s portfolio includes the future of roads and she spoke about the government’s mission-led agenda, praising the importance of logistics across the economy.

Topics raised by members during the meeting included decarbonisation, modal shift, Generation Logistics, driver welfare facilities and planning. Also at the meeting were officials from the Department of Business and Trade, who outlined the role of the new Logistics Unit within the department and opportunities for engagement. Members welcomed the new unit and discussed how it can help highlight the importance of logistics across all government departments.

To ensure that policy makers consider the needs of our sector, Logistics UK is attending the conferences of the three main UK political parties and also participated in the SNP conference. After engaging with Lib Dem Treasury and Business spokesperson Sarah Olney and other MPs at LibDem conference in Brighton this week, Logistics UK representatives will be present at the Labour conference in Liverpool and the Conservative conference in Birmingham. In addition to meeting party officials and MPs at both venues, Logistics UK will be hosting fringe meetings. In Liverpool, the event entitled “Driving Growth Across the UK: How to Unleash the Power of Logistics”, sponsored by DHL and SEGRO, will include Energy Committee Chair Bill Esterson MP on the panel, while “The Global Trade and Logistics Reception”, will be held in partnership with Heathrow, Rail Freight Group, Rail Partners and the Port of Dover.  Ministers have been invited, including Transport Secretary Louise Haigh MP and Minister for Trade Policy and Economic Security Douglas Alexander MP.

At the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, Logistics UK will be hosting two events: “Driving Growth Across the UK: How to Unleash the Power of Logistics, sponsored by DHL and SEGRO, with Greg Smith MP, Shadow Transport and Business Minister, and “The Global Trade and Logistics Reception”, again held in partnership with Heathrow, Rail Freight Group, Rail Partners and the Port of Dover.

If members are attending the Labour and Conservative party conferences, please put these events in your diary (see the details below) and the Logistics UK teams looks forward to seeing you there. Please note, all our events are in the conference secure zones, so you will need passes from the parties to attend.
