Greater Manchester launches Clean Air Zone consultation

On Thursday 8 October, Greater Manchester launched an eight-week consultation on its Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan.

It has been directed by government to introduce a ‘category C’ Greater Manchester-wide zone in order to bring harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels on local roads within legal limits in as short a time as possible.

Under the proposals, HGVs, vans, buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and minibuses that do not meet certain emissions standards will have to pay a daily charge to drive in the Zone. The Zone would operate 24/7 and follow as closely as possible the administrative boundary of Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester is inviting interested parties to take part in the consultation which is open until 23.59 on Thursday 3 December 2020.

Owing to COVID-19, Manchester has sought permission from government to delay its scheme from its original 2021 start date. It is now expected to start spring 2022, with vans and mini-buses getting an exemption until 2023.

BATH AND BIRMINGHAM CONFIRM CAZS

Logistics UK has welcomed last week’s announcement that Bath and Birmingham have both confirmed the date for the introduction of their Clean Air Zones. The business group has been working with the local authority in Birmingham for some time and said that the clarity offered by the announcement will allow operators to plan new business practices and speed vehicle replacement timelines where necessary.
