Member alert: Interested in innovation in logistics? Join our Innovation Working Group!

Logistics businesses are increasingly collaborating with technology companies to trial and implement new innovations, to deliver safe, efficient, green and interconnected logistics.

The government recently announced the latest tranche of projects as part of the Freight Innovation Accelerator, the Connected Places Catapult’s Freight Innovation Cluster has opened its third collaborative competition, the resources available through the Digital Supply Chain Hub continue to grow and, in December, Logistics UK’s Innovation Working Group will begin to build the Logistics Opportunities Map.

What all these initiatives have in common, is that they support collaboration on innovations to deliver the logistics sector’s goals – putting the sector, not technology, first.

Email us using the following link to join the Logistics UK Innovation Working Group to meet with fellow innovation and transformation leads within the logistics sector, to drive Logistics UK’s thought leadership and policy work forward, and hear from expert speakers on new collaboration opportunities.

The working group meets twice a year, in December and April, and through its next meetings, will be workshopping the Logistics Opportunities Map.

When complete, this will identify problem statements and rationales where innovation can support the sector.

On 4 December, we are meeting at Logistics UK’s office in central London, 9:30am to 12:30pm, and there is also an option to join online.

Also consider joining the Connected Places Catapult’s Freight Innovation Cluster (FIC) to be part of a government-backed network of professionals operating in the freight industry, technology sector, academia, local government and more that exists to connect, showcase challenges, and seek technology-driven solutions through commercial partnerships. The FIC has recently launched its third Collaborative Competition, which will see logistics and technology companies working together to solve challenges that are too large for any single organisation to address alone – with the tech consortia eligible for government funding, and the logistics businesses offering themselves as test beds. For more information, email FIC Programme Manager francesca.caramelle@cp.catapult.org.uk

Get involved in the Digital Supply Chain Hub to connect with a community of people, tools, and resources to build more efficient, resilient, and sustainable supply chains. Learn about the latest innovations addressing supply chain challenges, find the right digital solutions that will drive value for your business, and find partners to collaborate with, to de-risk innovation and accelerate adoption.

Cool for cabs - Hultsteins’ Ecogen CostSaver systems saving money

Logistics firm KM Transport Limited has achieved a four-figure monthly saving on diesel by fitting seven of Hultsteins’ Ecogen CostSaver systems.

Based in Runcorn, the company operates a fleet of seven articulated trucks and nine trailers and has served as a regional distributor for a major supermarket for the past eight years.

Director, Marian Dudziak, was keen to reduce the running costs of the company’s refrigerated trailers and found the solution with Hultsteins: Its Ecogen2 onboard generator converts existing diesel - powered transport refrigeration units (TRUs) to run on its built-in electric motor.

Ecogen2 can be retrofitted to any tractor unit with an engine power take-off. It generates 400 volts, and easily connects to the fridge motor via a five-pin plug.

Marian said, “We rented one unit to start, so we could establish what savings were achievable. When I did the calculations, it just made complete sense, so we fitted the rest of the fleet in the summer of 2023. The Ecogen units are saving us around £3-4,000 per month in diesel costs and reducing our carbon by around 8 to 9 tonnes per month.”

The ability to retrofit Ecogen to its existing Renault tractor units was a boon for KM Transport.  It allowed the operator to modernise its current equipment without the significant additional cost and time required to purchase new fridge trailers.

Acccording to Hultsteins, a shift from diesel to electric power for the TRUs slashes DPM (diesel particulate matter) emissions by 98% and reduces nitrogen oxides by at least four times which, says Hultsteins, provides the optimum sustainable solution.

“We found further savings on the fridge’s diesel engine R&M as the system is mainly running on electric,” added Marian.
