Logistics UK chief tells minister he is disappointed by Transport Committee’s report

David Wells, Logistics UK’s Chief Executive, has written to Transport Minister Trudy Harrison MP to express his disappointment at many of the conclusions of the Transport Select Committee’s recent report on the road freight supply chain.

“Logistics UK was incredibly disappointed by some of the findings and recommendations contained within the report,” Wells wrote in the letter, “We do not feel it adequately reflected the challenges the industry has faced and believe the levy the Committee proposed would place a disproportionate burden on our members, who are facing further turbulent times due to rising business costs and continued skills challenges.”

The report also criticised the lack of funded training provided, compared with the bus and coach sector. In the letter, Wells highlighted the majority of Logistics UK members do provide Driver CPC periodic training and noted the important role government intervention played when the HGV driver shortage became acute.

Other topics covered in the letter included addressing the barriers to additional facilities and parking being provided for drivers, moving more freight by rail and water, and recruitment and retention in the sector.

TFL TO ENFORCE MANDATORY CYCLE LANES

Last week (27 June 2022), Transport for London (TfL), began issuing fines to vehicles that drive within, or cross, the white lines of cycle lanes that are marked by a solid white line and cycle tracks on TfL’s Road Network (TLRN). This follows the introduction of new powers by government that allow TfL and London boroughs to fine motorists who infringe cycle lanes and cycle tracks in the same way that they can for bus lanes and yellow box junctions.
