Planning system call for evidence is a “positive opportunity for logistics,” says Logistics UK

Speaking on 4 July after the government announced a call for evidence on freight, logistics and the planning system, Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure Policy at Logistics UK said: “The call for evidence on freight, logistics and the planning system is long awaited, much needed and should act as a catalyst for long-term planning reforms that recognise the importance of our industry.

“Logistics underpins every sector of the UK economy and it’s vital that this is reflected in planning by acknowledging the need for logistics to support local communities, developing the necessary infrastructure to keep freight moving, incentivising investment in low/zero carbon operations and creating an environment that supports investment in logistics and warehousing sites.

“In publishing this call for evidence, government has taken a positive step forward in supporting the future development of our industry.

“We look forward to working with members to submit comprehensive and compelling evidence to the consultation and hope to see some positive planning reforms as a result.”

Winter 2023 Slots Alleviation and potential permanent changes to the Airport Slots Regulation

The Department for Transport has opened a consultation on slot alleviation conditions for winter 2023 which closes on 12 June 2023.

Since the summer 2020 season, there has been a relaxation of the standard 80:20 "use it or lose it" slot use norm due to the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the demand for air travel. The present set of relief measures is expected to expire on 30 October 2023, at the conclusion of the summer 2023 season. As a result, the government is debating whether to implement further measures to ease the burden on the winter 2023 season. Since a shortage of capacity throughout the night continues to be a significant problem for its members, Logistics UK persists in advocating no additional limitations to be put in place with regard to night flights.

To accommodate as many flights as possible while preserving operational integrity and reducing delays, the slot alleviation criteria must strike a balance. The specifics might change according to the airport and how severe the winter weather is.

Please contact Policy Advisor Ellis Shelton if you wish to contribute to Logistics UK’s consultation response.
