Bath engages with Logistics UK members over its proposed CAZ charges

Bath & North East Somerset Council (BANES) met with Logistics UK earlier today (1 December 2022), ahead of a public consultation on whether to charge Euro VI HGVs £50 a day to enter its Clean Air Zone (CAZ).

The council called the meeting to discuss the proposal in more detail with a view to engaging with the business group’s members locally.

Chris Yarsley, Senior Policy Manager – Road Freight Regulation, Logistics UK, said: “While Logistics UK supports efforts to improve the quality of the air in our cities, we are concerned that the extra emissions generated by HGVs making lengthy detours to avoid the city centre will outweigh any environmental benefits that charging otherwise CAZ compliant vehicles may have.

“We therefore welcome this offer by Bath & North East Somerset Council to enter into a constructive dialogue, as it will give us the opportunity to outline our members’ concerns and present the logistics industry’s case in the strongest terms.”

In an extra twist to the story, Wiltshire Council has expressed its “opposition and frustration” at the proposals and has said that it was strongly opposed to the plans. Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “We’re extremely disappointed that BANES is looking to change its CAZ to introduce a charge for Euro VI diesel HGVs exceeding 12 tonnes. These are the cleanest HGVs currently on the market, so this feels less of a clean air initiative and more of a quest to restrict all HGVs in the city.”
