Logistics UK responds as Amazon announces additional 5,000 electric vans

Amazon will add nearly 5,000 electric vans to their network. This represents the logistics giant's largest deployment in Europe to date.

The electric vans from Mercedes-Benz will join Amazon’s transportation network over the coming months, and be divided amongst five countries including the UK, Austria, France, Germany and Italy.

This investment is part of Amazon's work towards The Climate Pledge, the company's promise to achieve net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.

The vans will join thousands of zero-exhaust emission vehicles already deployed across Europe by Amazon and its delivery partners, including electric vans, e-cargo bikes, e-mopeds, and pushcarts.

The new fleet additions will see new eSprinter and eVito electric vans from Mercedes-Benz which, combined, are expected to travel more than 100 million kilometres and deliver more than 200 million packages each year.

The new vans include enhanced features for driver safety and ergonomics, as well as for delivery efficiency, such as custom shelving for package organisation. The vans will be manufactured in Germany and Spain.

Michelle Gardner, Logistics UK's Deputy Director - Policy said: "Amazon's announcement of 5,000 new electric vans is great news and underpins the logistics sector's commitment to decarbonisation.

"To enable more operators to adopt zero tailpipe emission commercial vehicles, it’s essential common barriers such as regulatory requirements and infrastructure are overcome. The government must work more closely with the logistics industry to address business concerns and give operators more confidence to invest.”

Neil Emery, Amazon’s Director, Global Fleet & Product, said: “This deployment of nearly 5,000 electric delivery vans further underscores our work to reduce carbon emissions in our operations. From electric bikes to vans to trucks and infrastructure, we are well on our way to transforming our transportation network.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Mercedes-Benz, other vehicle manufacturers, and policymakers to enable even faster electrification and decarbonisation across Europe.”

Sagree Sardien, Head of Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: "I am delighted that we are further intensifying our long-standing relationship with Amazon, and are working together towards the electric future of transportation.”

To help decarbonise its business, Amazon is working to increase route efficiency and scale zero-exhaust emission and alternative fuel vehicles. It currently has more than 30,000 electric delivery vehicles in its global transportation network.

The electric trucks will be deployed across high-mileage routes in the UK and Germany, transporting trailers to and from Amazon fulfilment centres (FC), sort centres and delivery stations.

The plan is to install 360kW electric charging points at key sites, capable of charging the batteries of the 40-tonne trucks from 20 to 80 per cent in just over an hour.

The zero-exhaust emission vehicles are expected to transport more than 350 million packages each year once fully operational. In addition to scaling electric trucks and vans, Amazon has established more than 60 micro-mobility hubs in over 45 European cities, enabling millions of zero-exhaust emission deliveries on foot or using electric cargo bikes.

Recent additions include Florence, Rome and Vienna, joining London, Paris, Milan, and Munich.
