Spotlight on a Policy Manager - Will Pryce

As a Policy Manager at Logistics UK, I’m working closely along colleagues Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager and Jonathan Walker, Head of Planning and Infrastructure, on all themes multimodal and infrastructure.

Before joining Logistics UK, my previous roles have included working for the Department for Transport, European Parliament on Transport as well as the Association of Policy and Crime Commissioners, where I covered policy areas including road safety, neighbourhood crime and strategic roads policy – all topics which I know are important to Logistics UK members. Although I am only in my fifth week here, I have already attended events, joined member meetings and been to a site visit – all offering great opportunities to meet our members and engage with such a welcoming sector.

During my first week at Logistics UK, we hosted our inaugural annual conference which represented a great opportunity for me to hear from members first-hand about their experiences, challenges and opportunities they face. I also attended Multimodal, where we launched our Waterborne Freight Network report, which maps existing waterways and calls for a radical rethink of waterways as core components of modern multimodal logistics, and for the expansion of their use to transport freight to reduce road congestion, lower emissions, improve air quality and enhance regional connectivity.

Importantly, this work builds on a previous report the team produced on the UK Logistics Network, which aims to start the conversation around government producing a national freight network. I also had the opportunity to meet with a number of our members at Multimodal and see how best we can work together, along with meeting the exhibitors and other stakeholders, learning about what they do and some of the innovation that is going on in our sector, from decarbonisation to infrastructure to skills and training.

Another way I have been engaging with members so far is through joining our Member Meetings and Policy Councils, attending the Road Council, Water Council and Rail Councils in recent weeks. At our most recent Water Council, we spent time with members discussing our response to a live consultation on decarbonising smaller vessels and also heard from the DfT on its recently published Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy.

As part of the team working on multimodal policy, I also attended a meeting hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail, where we continue to press for rail freight to be included as part of the agenda and included in their discussions.

As well as attending these key events, I’ve spent time meeting with key contacts and stakeholders who I will be working closely with, such as Network Rail and teams at the Department for Transport. Additionally, I have managed to squeeze in a visit to Cemex, which was a great opportunity to see a multimodal freight operation first hand and some of the fantastic work it is doing from a road safety perspective, as well as highlighting some of the innovation that has been invested in.

It has only been a month since I joined the team, but it has been busy! I am looking forward to meeting more members in time and really encourage any members interested to get in touch about joining us. In the coming months, I will be continuing to meet with members - if anyone is keen to discuss particular issues with me, please do get in touch by email at wpryce@logistics.org.uk

Looking ahead, I will be taking forward our members’ views on modal shift and infrastructure and best representing them, whether through consultation responses or via roundtables and at events.
