Policy Campaign Spotlight – December 2021

Highlights of recent campaigns run by Logistics UK's policy team.

Route to Net Zero manifesto

Logistics UK successfully launched its Route to Net Zero manifesto via a webinar during a virtual event at Glasgow on COP26 Transport Day. The webinar was attended by over 190 people, including members and external speakers, and was hosted by Logistics UK’s CEO, David Wells. The manifesto was drafted using previously agreed policy positions and outlines the steps that government and policymakers can take to help the logistics sector to decarbonise across all transport modes. The manifesto will continue to be used in our engagement activities in the future.

Changes to mobile phone laws – potential exemptions

The government consulted on changes to mobile phone laws making it an offence to operate a device in any way if it is not in a cradle. However, utilities and waste operators have raised operational reasons why a driver might need to operate a device whilst stationary, yet within the technical definition of ‘driving’. Logistics UK helped identify the potential challenges through utilities and waste forums and proposed a format for the exemption to government. The government responded by recognising Logistics UK’s position and committed to continue to consider the potential exemptions.
