2021 – the year of the van

Sponsored content

2021 has been another crucial year for van operators, with high demand for home deliveries driven by the pandemic’s ‘work from home’ directives, as well as increasing pressure to decarbonise fleets, highlighted by the publication of the government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan in July this year.

Throughout this year, Logistics UK has brought together key leaders across the van sector, innovative thinkers, manufacturers and operators to discuss the future of vans with a series of van events – including the Van Gold Partner Webinars, Van Operational Briefings, Next Generation Van Conference – attended by many hundreds of delegates.

EVENTS CAPTURE ACCELERATED PACE OF CHANGE

The vans sector is seeing more change than ever before, and the events – sponsored by Van Gold Partners; The AA, Bott Ltd, Brigade Electronics, Hertz UK Ltd, Lex Autolease, Quartix, and TVL – covered newsworthy topics such as alternative fuels, the introduction of electric fleets, navigating changed road space, driver behaviour, van security, driver welfare and operators’ obligations regarding vehicle safety defects and recalls. Industry experts also shared the latest key information on compliance and operating standards. Many of these subjects will continue to remain challenges heading into 2022 and Logistics UK is encouraged to see such a high level of engagement and debate from across the sector.

PANDEMIC HIGHLIGHTS VITAL ROLE OF VANS

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the crucial role vans play in everyday life, whether used for delivery services or to keep our vital utilities and services running. Van operators have worked tirelessly to meet the increased demand for deliveries and other services and, in the view of Logistics UK, deserve recognition for their efforts. As a result, the business organisation enjoyed celebrating the dedicated, and talented, operators across the UK in 2021 with events such as Van Driver of the Year and the Van Awards.

Looking ahead, 2022 looks to be another busy year for operators with the introduction of new rules in May, meaning some international van operators will come into scope of operator licensing for the first time, and changes to electric vehicle (EV) home charging grants. Logistics UK looks forward to continuing to work with both its Van Gold Partners and other members, to ensure operators are supplied with the essential information they need throughout the next 12 months.
