Generation Logistics case study: Heather, PR & Communications Apprentice, National Highways
“I was first attracted to PR and communications when I did a work experience placement with Birmingham University in its press office,” Heather begins.
“They had a digital comms manager and a social media manager, and I saw what they did every day and the passion that they did it with and I was really, really inspired. I’d never considered working in the logistics sector though until March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first broke.”
At the time she was a temporary worker with little to nothing to actually do, so she decided to find a role that fitted the experience she had gained and afforded her the opportunity to develop professionally during a really difficult time. This was when she found the apprenticeship role at National Highways.
“Before I started working in the sector, I knew absolutely nothing about logistics. I thought it was the process of setting up efficient deliveries, landing in the right places at the right times to make things happen and providing all the tools and resources you need to do that. But the true extent of what that meant, I had no idea.”
However, she is learning the ropes fast and now fully realises the impact of logistics in the smooth running of the country and how important her role is in communicating it.
“My job involves pulling super-complex – and sometimes and little bit boring – information from inside of the organisation and building a clear, cohesive and interesting programme of communications and delivering that on time, where relevant to an external audience so they can understand how passionate we are about what we do and the care with which we do it.”
Heather’s enthusiasm is there for all to see and we wish her luck as she climbs up the ladder of the logistics industry.
