May campaign highlight - Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill
Following extensive engagement and a letter to the Prime Minister, Logistics UK has welcomed the government announcement that it is to take a more pragmatic approach to the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill.
However, the business group is calling on government to publish full details on what it intends to reform and how, the timescales involved and the consultation processes for engaging with industry.
Originally under this Bill all retained EU law, comprising over 4,000 pieces of legislation, was set to be removed by 31 December 2023 unless specifically retained, improved or delayed.
Logistics UK has been calling on government to reduce uncertainty, remove this regulatory cliff edge and ensure there is sufficient time to get regulatory reform right.
As part of the campaign, Logistics UK’s CEO, David Wells, wrote to the Prime Minister outlining concerns about the proposed changes. The policy and public affairs teams engaged with MPs and Peers and highlighted issues in the media and at several speaking events.
On 10 May the government announced that the deadline of December 2023 will only apply to a specific list of legislation - less than 600 largely redundant laws - to be removed from the statute book, giving more time for regulations to be reformed.
Logistics UK welcomes that the Bill has now been amended to reflect a number of the business group’s asks, but is calling on the government to publish more detail on what exactly is to be reformed and how.
Logistics UK continues to closely monitor this situation on behalf of members.
