Logistics UK to relaunch its Discover Logistics Careers campaign for 2022

Following its successful launch last year, Logistics UK will once again be running its Discover Logistics Careers campaign on the weekend of 9-11 September 2022, to help showcase the breadth of career opportunities available across the sector.

INVITING LOCAL PEOPLE INTO WORKPLACES

Last autumn, with the skills shortage in an acute phase, the business group took action to highlight to potential employees the range of career paths that exist in the sector. Logistics UK designated a weekend in October during which its members could open their doors and invite local people into their businesses to talk about the jobs and career opportunities that they offer.

OPEN DAY EVENTS HELD BY HOUSEHOLD NAMES

The campaign, which received the backing of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and was publicised via The Sun on Sunday newspaper, saw a broad range of Logistics UK members sign up, including household names such as Aldi, John Lewis Partnership and Wincanton, which held more than 25 open events.

The business group briefed hundreds of Jobcentre managers across the UK to encourage their careers advisers to highlight the weekend events to potential applicants.

GENERATING MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESSES

One Logistics UK member that appreciated the benefit of signing up to the campaign was international freight forwarder business Yusen Logistics.

Gary Jackson, Head of HR Business Support, Yusen Logistics, said: “The Discover Logistics Careers campaign was a great opportunity for Yusen Logistics and resulted in over 50 applications for various roles, including warehousing and driving. The response was so positive that we planned to carry out more open days across the next twelve months and looked to establish more permanent careers offices at some of our facilities. Logistics is a continuously developing industry and we are always excited to find talented people who are interested in joining us in the adventure.”

HELPING DEMYSTIFY THE ‘HIDDEN’ SECTOR

Kevin Green, Marketing and Communications Director, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics is something of a ‘hidden’ sector, and often the communities that live around freight businesses are totally oblivious of what they do or what opportunities they can offer. Our Discover Logistics Careers campaign aims to lift the lid on what it means to work in logistics and highlight the sheer breadth of opportunities on offer.

“We were delighted with the level of support we received for our first Discover Logistics Careers campaign in 2021 from our members, the media, the government and the wider public. The level of positive feedback we received has inspired us to relaunch the campaign for 2022. But to do that we need our members to get on board. So please have a think about what sort of event you are able to offer on the weekend of 9-11 September and consider joining this important campaign.”

As an added benefit this year, any member events run through the Discover Logistics Careers campaign will also be promoted via the national Generation Logistics campaign, which aims to raise the profile and enhance the image of the logistics sector. Led by Logistics UK and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, the campaign is also backed by the Department for Transport.

TOOLKIT OF SUPPORT MATERIALS

Logistics UK will provide a toolkit of support materials to be used by participating members, and links to local DWP contacts, Jobcentres and other recruiters. To find out more, and to enrol your site as a participant in the weekend, please contact: dlc@logistics.org.uk
