Generation Logistics Case Study

Naveed Rafeeq, Graduate Software Engineer - Unipart.

As a Graduate Software Engineer at Unipart, I work at Instrumentel, where my role involves developing and maintaining software solutions.

I primarily design and implement pipeline systems using Node.js and Python, manage MongoDB databases, and test the migration from MongoDB OVH to Azure. I collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure scalable solutions, write clean and maintainable code, and participate in code reviews and debugging.

The Unipart graduate programme attracted me due to its hands-on approach and focus on professional development. I was excited about the opportunity to work on real-world projects, gain valuable experience with cutting-edge technologies, and rotate across different companies within the Unipart Group. The programme has met my expectations by providing practical challenges and a supportive learning environment.

Since joining the programme, I’ve gained proficiency in backend development with Node.js and Python, and developed my skills in MongoDB and cloud platforms like Azure. I’ve also learned about database migrations and testing. In addition to technical skills, I’ve strengthened my communication, collaboration, time management, and problem-solving abilities.

One of the most impactful projects I worked on was migrating the MongoDB OVH database to Microsoft Azure. I wrote Python scripts to validate data transfer and conducted thorough testing to ensure data integrity and system performance post-migration. This project improved scalability and reduced operational costs, which had a significant impact on the business.

Throughout the programme, I’ve received strong support from my line manager and colleagues. My manager has provided regular feedback and guidance, helping me set clear goals. The collaborative culture at Unipart has allowed me to learn from peers across different teams, which has contributed to my growth as a software engineer.

The Graduate Software Engineer programme at Unipart has been an invaluable experience. The combination of technical challenges, mentorship, and personal development has helped me grow both professionally and personally, setting me on a path to becoming a highly skilled software engineer.

For those considering the programme, I would advise being proactive, asking questions when needed, and embracing challenges. Building a network across the business and staying curious about industry trends will also help you make the most of the experience.
