Kerb Appeal: Why waste sector operators need tough tyres on urban routes

Sponsored content

Few components in commercial vehicle operations face as much punishment as tyres. For fleet managers overseeing waste collection and recycling centres, urban routes, narrow streets, and debris-strewn sites present a constant battle against premature tyre failure.

It's a costly reality, with sidewall scrubbing, trapped stones, and chipping leading to early removals, preventing tyres from reaching their full potential lifespan.

Early tyre replacement means higher operational expenditure, increased downtime for fitting, and more administrative burden. Greater tyre durability and longevity in such demanding conditions is therefore paramount for any fleet seeking to optimise its running costs and maintain consistent service delivery.

Recognising these formidable challenges, Bandvulc, the UK's leading manufacturer of retread tyres for commercial vehicles, has consistently focused on creating solutions engineered for resilience. Their Wastemaster 5 tyre, originally launched in 2021, has already established itself as a favourite amongst waste sector operators. Its development, testing, and production all take place in the UK, at ContiLifeCycle’s Ivybridge factory in Devon.

Central to The Wastemaster 5’s robust nature is Bandvulc’s ARMORBAND™ sidewall technology. This additional protective layer of rubber compound sits along the mid to lower sidewall, acting as a crucial shield against sidewall scrubbing and impact from kerbs and obstacles, significantly reducing damage and extending the tyre's operational life. Fewer sidewall failures mean fewer unplanned replacements, directly contributing to cost savings and improved vehicle uptime.

The tread design of the Wastemaster 5 is equally critical. It features wide zig-zag grooves, purpose-built to effectively clear mud and water, crucial for maintaining traction in diverse conditions often found in waste sites. Integrated stone ejection features actively work to prevent trapped stones from drilling into the tread, while stepped tread blocks and deep pocket sipes help to ensure optimal grip and handling, even in poor weather, enhancing both safety and efficiency for drivers navigating complex routes.

A recent example of Wastemaster 5’s effectiveness has been documented in a real-world scenario with the renowned German cleaning services company, Stadtreinigung Hamburg. The tyre has proved to be perfectly suited to withstand Hamburg’s narrow roads, sharp kerbs and cobbled streets as well as coping with the challenging weather conditions experienced in the city each year.

Bandvulc recently announced the availability of the Wastemaster 5 in a new 315/70 size catering for operators in urban waste and recycling centre environments. Speaking of the new tyre size, Tony Mailling, Head of Hot Retread Production EMEA and ContiLifeCycle Plant Manager, said: “The introduction of the 315/70 size with a high load rating further strengthens the Wastemaster 5’s position as the go-to tyre solution for operators in the urban waste collection sector.

“We know how tough the conditions are in this industry, and the Wastemaster 5 has been designed to withstand them. With innovative features tailored specifically to meet these unique demands, our customers can get the most out of their tyres while reducing downtime and maintenance costs.”
