Percy Thrower, Manager – Dangerous Goods Information, Logistics UK.

Safety first

Q. We have a mixed fleet of vehicles, and we are being told that all vehicles should carry a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Is this the case?

A. Both PSV and ADR vehicles must carry first aid kits and fire extinguishers as part of their safety kits. In response to other vehicles, there are no requirements to carry the additional equipment unless Health and Safety or a risk assessment dictates that it should be carried. If the additional equipment is carried, then the driver should also be trained in the use and the training recorded.

Training day?

Q. I have just been told that our drivers now require ADR training as they carry dangerous goods in limited quantities. Is this correct?

A. Yes and no. ADR was updated on 1 January 2025, and one of the big changes was that drivers that carry dangerous goods in limited quantities require drivers’ awareness training in line with provision 8.2.3 of ADR 2025. It states that any person whose duties concern the carriage of dangerous goods by road shall have received training in the requirements governing the carriage of such goods appropriate to their responsibilities and duties.
