Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) is a safe, reliable and efficient way of transporting goods around the world and is overseen by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Around 70 contracting nations and multinational bodies utilise this system whereby essential documentation will accompany a driver and their cargo, for the full length of their journey. The TIR Carnet details what goods are being transported in sealed load compartments and the seal number. Therefore Customs need only check that the seals are intact, have not been tampered with, and correspond to the right seal details and therefore they do not need to spend time opening all containers and visually checking loads. Members can contact our Member Advice Centre for more detailed questions around TIR Carnets and international regulations.
