Logistics drives growth
Logistics underpins our economy and is fundamental to our way of life. It supplies our hospitals, schools, factories, construction sites, shops and homes with everything they need, everywhere, every day – nothing moves without it.
Logistics is one of the UK’s largest economic sectors and employers, with its key hubs providing a catalyst for further growth and investment, helping places to thrive. It comprises more than 200,000 businesses, contributes £175 billion in GVA to the economy each year and employs 8% of the UK workforce.
The efficiency of logistics and the growth potential of the economy are completely intertwined. Due to this relationship, Oxford Economics has found that getting the policy and infrastructure environment right for logistics would unlock up to £8 billion a year in productivity-led growth. However, we are not currently going in the right direction. The UK fell from 4th to 19th place in the World Bank Logistics Performance index over the past decade, largely as a result of border friction and underinvestment in transport corridors. To drive growth right across the country, the logistics sector needs:
- A cost-competitive business environment to support the logistics sector to drive growth and supply chain resilience, and to ease the cost of living.
- Long-term investment in the UK’s interconnected transport infrastructure, backed by planning reform, to support safe, sustainable and efficient journeys.
- A fair transition to a green economy that keeps the costs of decarbonisation down, ensures resilient supply chains, and attracts investment.
- A reformed national skills system to attract new talent and support progression and upskilling in the logistics sector.
- Trade led growth, supported by the removal of trade frictions, particularly through a closer trading relationship with the EU.

Innovative and integrated infrastructure
The logistics sector is becoming ever smarter and more integrated, but the infrastructure it relies on needs to become more integrated and multi-modal too. We are calling for a national logistics transport and energy network, backed by a 30-year infrastructure strategy.
Campaign
Fair transition to a green economy
The logistics sector is embracing the decarbonisation agenda and is committed to playing its part to help the UK achieve net zero. We are calling for a national logistics transport and energy network, which must cover the energy infrastructure required for all freight transport modes.

Skills partnership to support a thriving sector
The logistics sector is investing in recruitment and skills to respond to the rapidly changing needs of businesses. The sector needs skills partnerships that reflect the breadth of high-quality roles across logistics, which support aspiration and resilience in communities across the country.

Trade as a driver of innovation and productivity
Logistics enables all international trade, but barriers to trade risk impacting the UK’s innovation and productivity. The logistics sector is calling for trade to be backed as a driver of progress, ensuring it is as frictionless as possible and that the UK enjoys improved international connectivity.
