A Midlands-based logistics firm said it is taking a practical and data-driven approach to decarbonisation efforts, as it introduces its first electric HGV into its fleet.

CS Ellis Logistics, founded in 1933 and operating with 170 staff, was able to purchase the vehicle through funding provided by Lloyds. It operates from multiple depots located across Rutland and Leicestershire, offering a range of services including national distribution, warehousing and global forwarding, alongside hazardous freight.

The vehicle is already being put to work, the company said, as it is charged onsite using power generated from 70 rooftop solar panels, resulting in enough electricity to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 80 tonnes every year.

It is being closely monitored to assess performance, range, running costs and customer impact over time; all factors that need to be taken into consideration to ensure the eHGV is fulfilling logistical needs.

The eHGV belongs to a wider infrastructure shift that includes 12 charging points, LED warehouse lighting, off-peak charging for electric forklifts, electric-powered inverted heating and cooling, and a tyre recycling programme, demonstrating a data-led approach.

CS Ellis Logistics’ wider roadmap involves AI-powered route optimisation, solar-powered EV infrastructure, and the donation of end-of-life vehicles for reuse in Africa.
